All About Stuttering Device

A stuttering device is a small apparatus that fits inside your ear and looks and feels much like a hearing aid. The main difference is that a stuttering device doesn't amplify the sound, it retransmits it with a slight delay and pitch.

This so-called 'choral effect' (also: echo effect), which is the driving principle behind the device, has been well-tested and documented. It basically tricks the brain into believing the stutterer is speaking in unison with somebody else, potentially resulting in significant improvements in fluency.

The primary device on the market nowadays is the speecheasy. There are several variations available, ranging from a behind-the-ear version to an almost completely invisible comfort fit. The device features volume control, updatable onboard software, and settings to control the delay and frequency of the auditory retransmission.

The device is discrete and comes with a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects. In these cases, it might be worthwhile to explore other options to treat your stuttering.

Other treatment options include speech therapy, psychological therapy, and various self-remedies. Unfortunately, the results of these methods are mixed at best and what works for one, may produce no results at all for another.

Stuttering devices are unfortunately no different; there are people who experience perfect fluency the moment they flick the device on, whilst others experience marginal to no improvement at all. The refund policy is helpful here, although it is only partial and thus might end up costing you significantly.

Given the results seen so far, I would definitely not label the stuttering device as a fad, but certainly not as a cure either. Although the stuttering device looks promising and has produced amazing results in many individuals, treatment remains symptomatic.

As any doctor or speech pathologist can tell you, the sad truth is that a true stuttering cure does not exist. The underlying cause is still the subject of intense scientific study and even when uncovered, we might still be a long way from a true cure.
